Vol. 238 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Diplomatic Relations with Greece.

6.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will detail the precise diplomatic relations, if any, existing between Ireland and Greece; whether the persons who represent as consuls the previous Greek government are still acting on behalf of the military regime; and, if so, if he will state their nationality and the Government's attitude to their representation of the military regime of Greece.

We have no diplomatic or consular representation in Greece. Neither has Greece any diplomatic representation here. She has, however, an Honorary Consul and an Honorary Deputy Consul in Dublin, both of whom are Irish citizens. Their appointments date from 1934 and 1935, respectively. The continued recognition of these officers does not imply approval of the present military government in Greece.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, could he, in relation to this matter of the Greek Government, do anything to prevent our delegates to the Council of Europe giving us a ridiculous reputation on the Continent in view of their approach to the Greek Government? I do not know if it falls within his province, but perhaps he could speak to Deputy MacEntee in his own Party to prevent him making idiotic statements on this subject?

I am not responsible for Deputy O'Leary. If I were, he would not be here.
