Vol. 238 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unfair Trade Practices.

66.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that many stores are announcing sales of goods at reduced prices when in fact there has been no reduction; whether he is aware that such sales are now an all the year round occurrence; and whether he will take steps, if necessary by the introduction of legislation, to protect the public in these cases.

I have had no evidence of any general practice of the kind mentioned by the Deputy, and have received no complaints about it. Unless there were clear evidence of unfair practices being adopted of a kind or on a scale beyond the competence of the public to protect themselves by the exercise of their own commonsense, the question of legislation would not arise.
