Vol. 238 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Figures.

20.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give a breakdown of the present unemployment position into age groups (a) under 18, (b) 18 to 25 years, (c) 25 to 40 years, (d) 40 to 60 years and (e) 60 years or over.

The particulars collected weekly for persons on the Live Register do not yield the age classification specified by the Deputy but a broader classification is available.

The number of persons on the Live Register on 21 February, 1969—the latest available date—was 68,514 and the number of these under 18 years was 902 and the number aged 65 years and over was 5,841. In September each year additional data are collected on the age groups of males on the Live Register who reside in incorporated towns.

The comprehensive age classification available for those returned as "out of work" in the Census of Population provides additional information. With your permission, Sir, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving a classification by age of (a) the number of males on the Live Register resident in incorporated towns on 13 September, 1968 and (b) the number of persons returned as "out of work" in the 1966 Census of Population.

Following is the statement:—

(a) Number of males resident in incorporated towns on the Live Register on 13 September, 1968 classified by age groups.

Can the Taoiseach say if it is possible to have a breakdown of age groups?

There is a breakdown in the supplementary information.

Is this breakdown in accordance with the question I have asked?

Not exactly. There is a breakdown of the age groups 18 to 25, 25 to 40, 40 to 60 and 60 upwards.

21.

asked the Taoiseach the present unemployment figures as a percentage of the national work force; and how this compares with the other member countries of the OECD.

It is estimated that persons out of work represented 5.4 per cent of the total labour force in April, 1968, the latest date for which this information is available.

I propose, with your permission, Sir, to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing persons out of work as a percentage of the total labour force in those OECD countries for which the figures are available. The systems under which unemployment statistics are compiled and the definitions involved show wide variations from country to country so that the figures in this statement should be regarded as only broadly comparable.

Following is the statement:

asked the Taoiseach if he will give a breakdown of the present unemployment figures for each county; and if he will detail the breakdown into each of the categories (a) unemployed for 6 months, (b) 6 months to 12 months, (c) 12 months to two years, (d) two years to three years and (e) more than three years.

The end of November, 1968 is the latest date for which an analysis of the Live Register figures by duration of continuous registration is available. Separate figures are not available for residents of each county as the information is collected in the form of global returns from each local employment office and all persons registering at a local office do not necessarily reside in the county in which the office is situated.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing the number of persons on the Live Register on 29 November, 1968 classified by (i) county of residence and (ii) duration of continuous registration of persons registering at the offices situated in each county. The figures for the duration classes specified at (c), (d) and (e) of the Deputy's question are grouped, as separate particulars are not available.

Following is the statement:
