Vol. 238 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bovine TB and Brucellosis Testing.

12.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether changes are contemplated in the procedures employed in bovine TB and brucellosis testing; if so, whether as a result farmers will lose their right to freedom of choice of veterinary surgeon; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In the light of experience under the Bovine Tuberculosis Eradication Scheme discussions are taking place between the Irish Veterinary Association and my Department with a view to ensuring that all testing done under the scheme—the cost of which is, of course, borne by the tax-payer—is of a uniformly high standard and, therefore, of maximum benefit to farmers and the cattle economy generally. These discussions are concerned with short term and long term arrangements. As far as the current year is concerned no changes of major significance to farmers are likely to take place but more officials testing of problem herds is considered necessary.
