Vol. 240 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Malicious Injury Claims.

58.

asked the Minister for Justice the approximate number of malicious injury claims against Dublin Corporation heard annually; and the number of cases awaiting hearing.

The approximate number of malicious injury claims against Dublin Corporation heard annually is 1,000. The number of cases awaiting hearing at present is 2,900.

In regard to the latter figure, the rate at which these cases are disposed of by the court depends on the speed at which Dublin Corporation processes the claims as a preliminary to court hearing. Because of this, the position is that up to the present only 80 claims have been listed for hearing at each fortnightly sitting for this class of business.

On the 7th January last, the county registrar wrote to the corporation drawing attention to the arrears and indicating that he proposed to increase to 160 the number of claims listed for each sitting. In a reply dated 9th January, the corporation asked the county registrar to defer action on his proposal pending consideration of the position by the corporation. Nothing further has been heard from the corporation, but the county registrar intends to pursue the matter.
