Vol. 241 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Insurance Income Limit.

46.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when and by what amount he is prepared to raise the current £1,200 income limit for social insurance.

As indicated in the Third Programme for Economic and Social Development the question of the existing remuneration of £1,200 for social insurance purposes is among those being examined but I am not yet in a position to say whether or not the limit will be raised. The limit, of course, applies only to employment otherwise than by way of manual labour.

In view of the general dissatisfaction with this now relatively low income limit in operation throughout the country as a result of the many increases and upward adjustments, could we ask the Minister for an urgent review of this limit? Simultaneously, could we ask him to consider the feasibility of introducing a graduated wage-related social insurance contributions system in this country?

Such a system has already been announced.
