Vol. 241 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Protection of Children.

51.

asked the Minister for Justice whether, in view of the widespread anxiety which exists about the inadequancy of the present procedures for the protection of children who are placed with a view to adoption, he is prepared to introduce legislation to amend the Adoption Acts.

I do not accept that there is widespread anxiety about the present procedures in relation to legal adoption and I have no proposals for the amendment of the Adoption Acts.

Are we to take it from the fact the Minister says he is not aware of any widespread anxiety that he has not received any communication on this subject from members of the public or members of voluntary societies?

I know there are a few people, whose identity is well known, carrying on a campaign on this matter and that they are evidently not satisfied for the sole reason, as far as I can see, that we are not doing the same thing as they are doing in England. I do not accept that view.
