Vol. 241 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Helicopter Services.

137.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is satisfied that the number of helicopters is adequate to cope with life saving on land and sea; and whether he has any plans to extend the service further.

The existing Air Corps helicopter service which comprises three helicopters has proved adequate to deal with all search and rescue calls made on it since it was established about five years ago. The Deputy will, however, appreciate that the helicopters represent only a part of the total services available to cope with life saving on land and sea. In addition to search and rescue operations the helicopters provide an ambulance service. The requirements of the service are kept constantly under review.
