Vol. 241 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Industries.

63.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the serious decline in population in County Mayo; and if he will take the necessary steps to have industries established in all the towns so as to provide employment for the local people.

I would refer the Deputy to the replies given previously to similar questions by him. As I have already indicated, the Government are providing generous incentives to industrialists to promote increased industrial development in all areas. It is for industrialists themselves to take advantage of these facilities and for local interests to encourage private enterprise to set up industries in their own areas. I can reassure the Deputy that any sound proposals by local or other interests for the establishment of industries in County Mayo and other areas will have my full support.

The operation of the Small Industries Programme in County Mayo is making a worthwhile contribution to the employment position there. I understand that grants to a substantial extent have already been approved for small industries in County Mayo.
