Vol. 241 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Franchise.

45.

asked the Minister for Local Government the grounds on which the Government oppose the extension of the franchise to 18 years of age.

As I indicated in reply to questions on the 7th November last, a reduction of the voting age would involve an amendment of the Constitution. The Government have taken no decision.

Could I ask the Minister on what grounds he does not propose to initiate such a change in the Constitution? Is the mere fact it requires a constitutional amendment enough to frighten him off or have the Government some actual reason against giving the franchise to people at this age?

No, we have not got around to considering it.
