Vol. 241 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Insurability Limit.

48.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare for what purposes other than specific social welfare purposes the insurable limit of £1,200 perannum is used in such a way as to cause difficulty in abolishing that or any other limit of insurability.

Persons insured under the Social Welfare Acts and persons whose yearly means are less than £1,200 are included among the persons eligible for the limited services of the Health Acts available to the middle income group.

Insurability under the Redundancy Payments Acts, 1967, applies to persons who are fully insured under the Social Welfare Acts.

A ceiling of £1,200 a year is used in determining eligibility for full grants under the Higher Education Grants Scheme. A similar ceiling is used for the purposes of calculating the advances or remission of fees for teacher-training students.

Any increase in the remuneration limit for social insurance would therefore have consequential effects outside the field of my Department's activities.
