Vol. 241 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Rural Electrification.

62.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power why there is such a delay in extending electricity to Clondrohid, Kilnamartyra, and Ballyvourney areas, Macroom, County Cork and when work is likely to begin in those areas.

I understand from the ESB that the amount of capital and skilled manpower which can be made available for the board's rural electrification post-development scheme dictates the speed at which the scheme can proceed. The exceptional increase in labour costs last year reduced the amount of work which could be done. In addition, the improvement in the terms for the connection of consumers, which became operative in June, 1968, resulted in a greater number of acceptances; this in turn necessitated a greater amount of work than was originally expected in those areas which have been developed since that time.

The board's Ballyvourney rural area has already been recanvassed and it is hoped that construction work will be completed by 31st March, 1970. The Clondrohid area is scheduled for recanvass in mid 1970 and for construction towards the end of that year. When work in Clondrohid has been completed a recanvass will be commenced in the Kilnamartyra area.
