17.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what stocks of 1968 harvest wheat are held in the country; what tonnage has been taken over and paid for by his Department; what quantity has been taken over and not paid for; and when and how his Department propose to dispose of this wheat.

The quantity of surplus millable wheat of the 1968 crop amounted to approximately 91,000 tons. All of this wheat has been purchased and paid for by An Bord Gráin. Approximately 4,000 tons remain in stock at present. This wheat is being sold as ordered. At the beginning of the current cereal year the flour millers held stocks of 1968 crop native wheat amounting to approximately 75,000 tons as compared with a normal carryforward of 50,000 tons.
