Vol. 242 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Chapelizod Garda District.

54.

andMr. R. Burke asked the Minister for Justice what areas other than Ballyfermot are within the jurisdiction of the gardaí stationed at Chapelizod, County Dublin; and the latest available figures for the population of the Chapelizod Garda District.

The other areas which are policed from Chapelizod Garda Station are: Chapelizod village and precincts, Johnstown, Blackditch and Palmerstown, excluding Palmerstown Upper.

The census of population, 1966, which contains the latest available information, gives the population of the area policed from Chapelizod Garda station as 28,156. The total population of Chapelizod Garda District, which includes the localities served by the stations at Clondalkin and Lucan, is 50,809.

Can the Minister tell the House if his colleague is satisfied there is an adequate number of gardaí to patrol this area, including Ballyfermot?

The Minister for Justice has seen to it that the strength of the force there was increased by 11 men in October. He is about to increase it by a further four men in the next few days.

Is the Minister satisfied that number will be adequate?

One can never be satisfied, but the Minister for Justice is always on the job.

How can you be satisfied when you have not got sufficient men in the entire force?
