Vol. 242 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Medical Schools.

9.

asked the Minister for Health if he can state the number of junior medical staff hospital posts occupied by foreign graduates of Irish medical schools; if he is aware that such graduates have been employed while Irish graduates have had to emigrate; and if he will take steps to ensure that preference is given to Irish graduates in future.

The information is not available in my Department.

With regard to the second part of the question, I am not aware that the position is as stated by the Deputy. If he will furnish me with specific instances of discrimination against Irish graduates in regard to employment in junior medical officer posts in local authority hospitals, I shall be glad to have them investigated. I have, of course, no functions in regard to the employment of such staff in voluntary hospitals.
