Vol. 242 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tax Refunds.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance what steps are being taken to clear up the arrears in the tax refund section of the Revenue Commissioners' Office, and to refund excess tax deductions to taxpayers with the minimum of delay.

Claims for repayment of income tax, apart from PAYE repayments, are dealt with in the Revenue Commissioners' claims branch. Owing to staff shortages there has been some increase recently in the number of cases on hands in that branch. The clearing of these, however, is not being unduly delayed and there has been very little complaint from taxpayers or their agents.

PAYE end-of-year refunds are worked in the various tax districts. These refunds are made as early as possible, but delays are sometimes caused by the failure of employers to furnish certain information in time. If the Deputy has any actual instances in mind perhaps he will be so good as to write to me about them.
