Vol. 242 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Married Women's Tax Free Allowance.

37.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he proposes to take any action to improve the tax free allowance of married women at work; whether he is aware that there is a wide demand for such women in industry and services; and that the present inadequate tax free allowance of £60 is the main factor preventing more married women from returning to work.

The Deputy will appreciate that I cannot say in advance what proposals the next Budget Statement may or may not contain.

Is the Minister giving attention to this problem of married women who, as he knows, are severely penalised by this tax allowance which is a large factor in preventing married women from returning to work where they are needed?

Yes, there is a great deal of talk going on at the moment.

Does the Minister intend taking any action on this? I am not asking for a specific date but may we expect some results for married women?

I am keeping my ear attuned to the public talk that is going on.
