Vol. 242 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rent-a-Cottage Scheme.

52.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the progress to date of the rent-a-cottage scheme; and what plans there are for extending this type of tourist attraction.

Rent-an-Irish-Cottage Ltd., a company whose shareholding is held by local authorities and promotional interests in the area of County Clare, County Limerick and North Tipperary, have embarked on a scheme for the erection of 100 cottages in these areas for renting to tourists. Shannon Free Airport Development Company Ltd. hold ten per cent of the shares and also manage the company.

Twelve cottages have been provided at Ballyvaughan this year and a further eight will be available at Corofin in 1970. The company also propose to provide cottages at Broadford, Feakle and Carrigaholt, County Clare, Kilfinane, County Limerick, and Puckane, North Tipperary. The location of the balance of the 100 cottages has yet to be decided. Applications from a number of centres are under consideration.

It is hoped that regional tourism organisations will endeavour to promote similar development in their regions with the assistance of Bord Fáilte.
