Vol. 242 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondary Teachers Travelling Expenses.

72.

asked the Minister for Education why secondary teachers do not receive travelling expenses for attending departmental refresher courses while both vocational and national teachers receive such expenses.

Travelling expenses and maintenance allowances are payable to recognised secondary teachers in respect of satisfactory attendance at departmental courses of at least one week's duration. The question of payment of these allowances in respect of attendance at shorter courses is at present under consideration.

Is the Minister aware that in County Cork primary and vocational teachers are receiving travelling allowances for a junior mathematics refresher course while secondary teachers are not receiving any such allowance for attending a senior mathematics refresher course?

As I told the Deputy, if the courses last for at least one week travelling expenses and maintenance allowances are payable, and I am examining the question in relation to shorter courses.
