Vol. 242 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Air Pollution.

9.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the report of the association in England between air pollution and respiratory deaths; and whether it has been studied as to its relevance to conditions in Ireland.

I am aware of a number of reports referring to the possible association between air pollution and respiratory deaths in Britain. Perhaps the Deputy could indicate the specific report to which the question relates so that I can consider it particularly in regard to the point raised.

I can point out to the Minister one particular report which indicates that one day's fog or one day's severe air pollution in the Manchester-Birmingham area results indirectly in 10,000 deaths. In view of the severity of this would the Minister not like to make a statement regarding the association between air pollution and respiratory deaths?

There are a number of different reports on this matter. Although it has been established that there are associations between air pollution and the instances of respiratory disease a number of experts say other factors have to be taken into account when making this study.

Would the Minister not think it necessary to make a study comparing air pollution levels in Dublin with the number of deaths from respiratory diseases to see whether or not there is a relationship between these two factors?

The matter is being studied, but I do not regard it as a matter of great priority at the present time.
