Vol. 243 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recruitment of Radiographers.

12.

asked the Minister for Health what steps are being taken to prevent the growing shortage of radiographers; and if he will make sufficient funds available to establish a new school of radiography, particularly in view of the continuing rise in the number and complexity of radiological examinations.

Recent inquiries from a selection of health authorities and voluntary hospitals in regard to the question of difficulty in recruiting radiographers, revealed that, apart from one case, no real problem had arisen in filling permanent posts. However, there has been difficulty in some cases in filling short-term locum appointments.

The school of radiography, at St. Vincent's Hospital, has an annual intake of eight students. This number will, I understand, be increased to 12 when the school transfers to new quarters at Elm Park. The question of further training needs to meet the longer-term expansion of demand is at present being considered in my Department.

Can the Minister give an indication of what he anticipates will be the required output of radiographers in five or ten years time in view of the world-wide trend in medicine which demands an increasing use of radiography?

I have not got that figure but we are considering the possibility of expanding the school of radiography and proposals have come from Cork for a radiography school there. We will keep the matter in mind. The Deputy is perfectly correct in saying that the practice and use of radiography is absolutely essential in medicine.
