Vol. 243 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nurses Negotiating Machinery.

18.

asked the Minister for Health if he will widen the scope of negotiating machinery for nurses; the present scope of such machinery; the extensions to same which the Irish Nurses Organisation have requested him to make; and what concessions he is disposed to make in the matter.

General-trained nurses are a party to the scheme of conciliation and arbitration for local authority officers, which deals with claims for increased remuneration and allowances. A revision of the scheme is now being negotiated between the staff panel, representing the employees, and the County and City Managers Association, representing the employers. I understand that a large measure of agreement has been reached as to the scope of the new scheme and that some minor issues are in process of resolution. I shall be happy to consider such proposals as may emerge from the negotiations.
