Vol. 243 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospital Psychiatric Beds.

8.

asked the Minister for Health the number of psychiatric beds in general hospitals, and what steps are being taken to increase the number of such beds in general hospitals in accordance with modern developments in medicine.

There are at present 205 psychiatric beds in, or associated with, general hospitals. Proposals for an additional 350 such beds have been approved, and the provision of a further 70 beds is under active consideration.

It is visualised that psychiatric beds will be provided in the general and regional hospitals recommended in the report of the consultative council on the general hospital services. The possibility of providing, and the need to provide, additional psychiatric beds will be borne in mind.

Could the Minister tell us in how many hospitals are the 205 present beds contained?

It is rather difficult. Perhaps the Deputy would like to ask the question again, divided into various categories.

Thank you.
