Vol. 243 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment and Emigration Statistics.

6.

asked the Taoiseach the number of persons unemployed and the number who emigrated in the years 1957 and 1968.

The estimated number of persons unemployed in April, 1957, was 78,000 and in April, 1968, 61,000. These figures correspond to the number of persons who stated that they were out of work at the time of the census of population, although usually in gainful employment. They are derived by using live register statistics in conjunction with the most recent census of population results.

The difficulty of obtaining figures of emigration for individual years has been stressed on many previous occasions. The only accurate information on this subject is in respect of net emigration for the periods between censuses of population.

Estimates have been prepared of net emigration for individual years using the figures of net outward passenger balance by sea and air in conjunction with the latest available information for intercensal periods. On this basis it is estimated that net emigration in the 12 months to April, 1957, was 42,000 and in the 12 months to April, 1968, 18,000.
