Vol. 243 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Children's Bicycles.

97.

asked the Minister for Education what steps are taken at schools to ensure that pupils' bicycles used for travel to or from school during lighting-up time are adequately provided with lights and reflectors.

The enforcement of the law in regard to the lighting of bicycles is primarily a matter for the Garda Síochána. In the schools road safety in all its aspects is an essential element of each child's training in citizenship. The teachers inculcate the need for care when using the roads and for complying with the provisions of the law. Special talks on the subject are given by the Garda and by officers of the Safety First Association of Ireland.

The schools have also co-operated wholeheartedly in the "Light-a-Bike" campaign conducted by the Safety First Association.
