asked the Taoiseach the price of the following commodities for the years 1954 and 1969 and the percentage increase in each case of (a) a barrel of wheat, (b) a barrel of malting barley, (c) a barrel of barley, (d) a pint of stout, a pint of beer and a glass of whiskey, (e) a pint of milk to producer, (f) a pint of milk to consumer, (g) a gallon of creamery milk, (h) one cwt of pig fattening meal, (i) one cwt. of sow and weaner meal, (j) one cwt. of dairy meal, (k) one cwt. of layers mash, (1) one ton of beet and (m) one lb. of wool.

The information requested by the Deputy is set out in the table below in so far as it is available. Price data in respect of 1969 are not yet available for certain commodities and 1968 prices are supplied in these cases. Prices given in respect of 1969 are provisional.

(b) The percentage changes are those measured for the Consumer Price Index numbers from the returns furnished by a large number of price reporters. Meaningful national average prices are not available for these commodities since the item priced is not identical in quality for each reporter.

(c) National average prices as obtained for the Consumer Price Index. The prices relate to two different series of index numbers; the percentage change takes account of this.
