Vol. 244 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reactor Cattle.

24.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries his Department's regulations concerning the purchase by his Department of TB reactor cattle.

25.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the maximum price laid down by his Department for the purchase of various types of TB reactor cattle.

26.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries when regulations concerning the maximum purchase prices of various types of TB reactor cattle were laid down; and if he will consider raising the maximum amount payable for each type of beast.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 24, 25 and 26 together.

The Regulations regarding the purchase by my Department of TB reactor cattle are contained in Article 14 of the Bovine Tuberculosis (Attestation of the State) Order, 1965 and section 6 of the Diseases of Animals (Bovine Tuberculosis) Act, 1957.

The maximum prices at present applicable are:

Pedigree animals

£200

Non-Pedigree animals

£100

In accordance with section 6 (2) (b) of the Diseases of Animals (Bovine Tuberculosis) Act, 1957 the present maximum prices were determined by instruments signed by the Ministers for Agriculture and Finance in March, 1958 in the case of pedigree animals and in May, 1965 for non-pedigree animals.

The question is periodically reviewed and I am satisfied that up to now the prices given by my Department for reactors have fairly represented market values.

Is the Minister aware of any complaints about the maximum prices payable by the Department for reactors?

I am not aware of a great clamour that anybody has been getting too much, nor do I expect to have that experience, but as to the reverse, I do not think there is any serious complaint.

27.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the average price paid by his Department for TB reactor cattle for each of the years 1960 to 1969, distinguishing between various types of beasts and different ages of beasts.

28.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the percentage of reactors for each type of beast under the TB testing scheme for each year from 1960 to 1969.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 27 and 28 together and, as the reply is mainly in tabular form, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

Records relating to reactors purchased under the Bovine Tuberculosis Eradication Scheme are kept on the basis of financial years and comprise two categories of animals only that is to say, cows and animals other than cows. The following table shows in relation to each of these categories the average price paid and the percentage of reactors in each financial year from 1959-60:
