Vol. 244 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Prices.

29.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will indicate the likely trend of cattle prices during 1970.

Prices for bullocks and heifers, which were at a satisfactory level during 1969, are likely, as far as can be foreseen at this stage, to continue so during 1970. Prices here are, of course, largely determined by the conditions from time to time on the British market and they will also be affected by any changes that may result from the current annual price review in Britain. The prices for slaughter cows depend mostly on the manufacturing beef trade with the US and, with some increase in the US import allocation for 1970 and the prospect of a continuing firm market there, these prices are also likely to be reasonably satisfactory.
