Vol. 244 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Rent Schemes.

47.

asked the Minister for Local Government the basis of the decision of Dublin Corporation to raise the rent of some 2,000 pensioner tenants by 1s 9d per week from 5th January 1970 following payment to them of the 10/- per week increase in the contributory old age pension.

The detailed operation of rent schemes is a matter for the local authority concerned. I have no information as to the numbers affected by variations in assessments.

The rent schemes operated by the Dublin Corporation provide for a rent within specific ranges, equivalent to 1/6th of income after deductions. The deductions include increases since 1957 in social welfare non-contributory allowances. Increases under social welfare contributory insurance schemes are not, however, excluded, basically because these benefits are paid to persons without reference to means.

Question No. 48 postponed.
