Vol. 244 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin-Clonee Road.

26.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Local Government what plans Dublin County Council have for the improvement or replacement of the Dublin-Clonee portion of the main Dublin-Navan Road; and when it is proposed to improve this totally inadequate portion of road.

No proposals for the improvement of the road between Dublin and Clonee have been submitted to me and I cannot say when improvement works on this road are likely to be undertaken by Dublin County Council.

(Cavan): Would the Minister agree that nothing appears to have been done by way of improvement on this road for at least 25 years? Would he also agree that it is now totally unsuitable and inadequate for the volume of traffic on it? Would he make representations to Dublin County Council to do something about it?

I would agree with what the Deputy has said. It is a matter for Dublin County Council to submit proposals for its improvement. There are not any such proposals before me at the present time.

Is the Minister not aware that plans are at a fairly advanced stage for this road?

They have not been submitted to me yet.

(Cavan): Perhaps if the Minister consulted his colleague who is chairman of the council he might suggest to him that something be done.

The Minister's colleague has very great difficulty with the said council. He presides over a coalition-dominated county council which has specialised in obstruction, particularly in this matter of road improvement, for a long number of years.

(Cavan): A coalition of whom?

A coalition of the Fine Gael and the various Labour Parties. I think they are nearly all represented there.

How did he become a member of the council?

That is a separate question.

He had great ability to get there anyway.
