Vol. 244 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - University Students.

85.

asked the Minister for Education the number of university students to whom grants have been made available through county and borough councils in the current year; and the total number of university students enrolled for the current year.

The total number of students enrolled for the first time in universities this year was 4,788. Of these approximately 4,200 came from within the State and of this latter number 1,488 are in receipt of university grants.

Can the Minister say whether as a result of the introduction of this scheme there has been any reduction in the number of other types of scholarships and if so, how great it has been, and what has been the net increase in the number of aided students in the universities?

All I can say is that before the introduction of the scheme 275 university scholarships were awarded annually. The number of grants is 1,488 for the particular year referred to by Deputy Desmond in his question.
