Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin School Requirements.

107.

asked the Minister for Education the extent to which progress has been achieved in the replacement of Scoil Lorcáin, Baile na Manach, Dominican Convent national school, Dún Laoghaire, St. John of God special school, Glenageary, Killiney national school and Stillorgan national school; and the result of the survey of school requirements in the Newtownpark parish, County Dublin, and intended national school developments in that area.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate for inclusion in the Official Report a statement as to the present position with regard to each of the schools mentioned in the Deputy's question, and in relation to primary school facilities in the parish of Newtownpark, County Dublin.

Scoil Lorcáin, Baile na Manach.

It has been decided that a new school for girls be built in replacement of the existing Scoil Lorcáin (Cailíní) and that the boys' school building be improved and extended.

The question of the extent of the accommodation to be provided in the new girls' school and in the enlarged boys' school is being considered in connection with statistics furnished by the district inspector of schools for the area and in consultation with Coiste Scoil Lorcáin. This matter will be brought to early decision and planning can then proceed.

Dominican Convent, Dún Laoghaire.

Plans which have been prepared by the manager's architect have been approved but the conductors have not yet intimated that the necessary local contribution towards the cost of the new school will be provided. Until they have done so the further arrangements for the project cannot proceed.

St. John of God Special School, Glenageary.

Approval has been granted for the erection of a new school and the submission of plans prepared by the manager's architect is awaited.

Killiney National School.

Approval in principle has been given for a new school under Protestant management, to accommodate about 160 pupils. The reverend manager is endeavouring to secure a suitable site for the new building. When he is in a position to offer a site it will be inspected as to its suitability by the Commissioners of Public Works and, if it is found suitable, the commissioners will undertake the planning of the school.

Stillorgan National School.

The reorganisation of primary school facilities for Protestant children in the Blackrock-Stillorgan area is under consideration, but it is not possible to say at this stage what the decision in this regard may be. Meanwhile, the present St. Brigid's national school at Stillorgan is adequate to requirements.

Newtownpark Parish.

The survey of primary school requirements in the parish of Newtownpark has not yet been completed but such information as has come to hand suggests that there is as yet sufficient school accommodation in the adjoining parishes to cater for the children of Newtownpark parish. The parish priest has indicated that he has a suitable site for a new school, if and when it is required, and the situation is being kept under observation.
