Vol. 244 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Selection of Examination Supervisors.

106.

asked the Minister for Education the method of selection of examination supervisors for the intermediate and leaving certificate examinations.

Vacancies for superintendents for the intermediate and leaving certificate examinations are advertised in the public press and the applicants deemed most suitable are selected.

How are they deemed suitable or unsuitable? What method of selection is used?

Candidates seeking appointment for the first time must be certified by the headmaster or the manager of the school or the chief executive officer as being suitable. Those who are already doing the job and doing it satisfactorily are appointed if they apply.

Might I ask the Minister if, as a result of the 1964 difficulties in regard to the appointment of supervisors and examiners, any personnel other than members of the teaching profession are now being employed in this work?

I am afraid I cannot answer that question. The vast majority of those selected are secondary or vocational teachers.

Others are being phased out?

I cannot say that.

Surely it is obvious that everyone who behaved as the Deputy suggested in the 1964 difficulties is, in fact, being retained.

107.

asked the Minister for Education the method of selection of examiners for the correction of papers in the intermediate and leaving certificate examinations.

Vacancies for assistant examiners for the correction of papers in the intermediate and leaving certificate examinations are advertised in the public press and the most suitable applicants are appointed.

Is the same method of selection used as the Minister indicated in his reply to the supplementary on Question No. 106?

Yes, and the great majority of these again are secondary and vocational teachers and other qualified persons such as university lecturers.

The method of selection is the same?

It is the same method.

Is the Minister also considering the primary teachers who scabbed during the strike?

That is a separate question.
