Vol. 244 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Marine Service Educational Services.

114.

asked the Minister for Education what educational facilities are available to young men who are anxious to follow a career as a ship's deck or engineering officer or as a rating in the mercantile service.

Courses are conducted at the Crawford municipal technical institute, Cork, in marine engineering leading to the first class certificate of competency. A training scheme for deck cadets is operated by Irish Shipping Limited which leads to qualification as third officer. Junior deck officers may then proceed to obtain qualification to the level of masters certificate by attending courses conducted by the Irish Nautical College, Dún Laoghaire. Training courses for ratings are also held at the Irish Nautical College as the need arises.
