Vol. 245 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment Priorities.

10.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will strongly recommend to local authorities that they give priority to the employment of persons who have served in the First Line Reserve of the Defence Forces in the recent call up and who have now been discharged and are seeking employment; and if he will make a statement in the matter.

In the giving of employment local authorities have been exhorted, other things being equal, to give preference to men who have had at least five years service in the permanent Defence Force; age concessions are also given to ex-servicemen who are applicants for certain posts in the local authority service such as clerical officer, rent collector etc. I would also remind the Deputy that the Minister for Defence stated in reply to a question on 23rd October that, in any case where it was represented to him that the recent call-out jeopardised employment, exemption from service was granted.
