asked the Taoiseach the number of sows and gilts in young on 1st January, 1970, 1969, 1968 and 1967.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the required information.

Following is the statement:

THE estimated number of sows and gilts in pig on holdings in January in each year 1967 to 1970 inclusive (a).

(a) The estimates are based on returns specially collected for a sample area covering approximately one in every four of the District Electoral Divisions i.e. each DED in which a Garda Station is situated.

(b) The figures for 1968 relate to February as the enumeration in that year was taken a month later than usual as part of the precautionary measures to prevent an outbreak of the foot and mouth disease.
