Vol. 245 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Proposals.

65.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce (a) the number of proposals for new industries or extensions to existing industries being considered by his Department and (b) how many of these may go into operation in the current year; and if he will state in respect of (a) and (b) what is the total initial and long-term employment content.

There are 177 proposals before the Industrial Development Authority for the establishment or expansion of industries and the promoters of these projects estimate that direct employment will be afforded to 12,700 persons in the first year of production and to 21,900 persons at full production. At present 45 new projects are under construction and are expected to be in production before the end of the current year; these projects have an estimated employment content of 2,900 persons at the end of the first year of production and 4,700 persons at full production. A fairly substantial number of other projects, which are currently at the approved stage or still under negotiation, may also commence manufacturing before the end of the year but it is not possible at this stage to give precise information in this connection.
