Vol. 245 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ice Cream Manufacture.

27.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether there has been a decline in the use of Irish cream in the manufacture of ice cream; and if he will make a statement on this matter.

Regulations made by the Minister for Health under the Health Act, 1947, prescribe that ice cream must contain not less than 5 per cent by weight of milk-fat. Cream is not, of course, the only permissible form of milk fat and other milk products—such as whole milk powder —with the required milk-fat content can also be used. I am at present considering the possibility of raising the minimum milk-fat content of ice cream, as part of a general examination of the question of maximising the use of milk and milk-fat at home.
