Vol. 245 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recognition of Driving Licences.

47.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the general operation of driving licence tests in the Republic, Northern Ireland and Great Britain and the growing conformity of road traffic legislation in these islands, he is prepared to seek a reciprocal agreement between the Governments for the common recognition of driving licences, more particularly as it is currently possible for an Irish national with a current Irish licence to take up employment in Northern Ireland or Great Britain, to be obliged to go through their test for his licence and on return after five years to employment in the Republic to be obliged to resubmit for a further test for licence renewal.

I appreciate the desirability of having reciprocal arrangements for the recognition of driving licences granted in other territories and have made it clear that I am prepared to accept, as granting exemption from our driving test, a driving licence granted in any country which has concluded an agreement with us on this matter. I am investigating the possibility of concluding agreements on these lines.
