Vol. 245 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Department of Defence Outdoor Employees.

69.

asked the Minister for Finance if any negotiations have taken place between Government Departments with the trade unions representing civil outdoor employees of the Department of Defence regarding demands for a wage increase and improvement in working conditions, with effect from 1st April, 1970.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 67, 68 and 69 together. I met a deputation from the public services committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions on Monday last concerning pay in the public service. As indicated in the statement issued after the meeting the committee is considering the position in the light of the discussion.

As regards conditions of employment, discussions have been taking place over the past three months under the auspices of the Labour Court Conciliation Service between Government Departments and an ICTU sub-committee regarding the introduction of a pension scheme for industrial employees in Government Departments. Agreement has already been reached with this sub-committee on an improved sick pay scheme for these employees.

Is the Minister aware that there are a number of other matters which are not included in either of those which have not been discussed, and would he recommend to his Department that there should be discussions?

The Deputy, I am afraid, does not understand, if he thinks that I recommend things to my Department.

I know the Minister orders them.
