Vol. 245 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cement Dispute.

85.

asked the Minister for Labour his Department's total estimate to date of the number of construction and allied workers laid off arising from the trade dispute in Cement Limited.

The live register of unemployed at the end of March, 1970 showed an increase of approximately 9,000 on the corresponding date last year. The increase is believed to be due almost entirely to the trade dispute at Cement Limited.

What steps have been taken to end it?

That is a separate question.

Appropriate steps are always taken.

In view of the increase of 9,000 in unemployment figures, surely the matter is urgent.

Could the Minister say how many man-days have been lost, in view of all we heard about 800,000 man-days being lost last year?

That is, unfortunately, a very big number. That is not relevant.

It is directly relevant to the question.

It is a separate question.

Have either of the new rights commissioners investigated it?

No. It would not be the type of thing they would undertake at all. They would make an early investigation of a case before something actually happened.

Not the Labour Court at all?

The conciliation officers of the Labour Court are constantly in touch with the situation.

About 60,000 man-days lost every week.

Perhaps more.
