Vol. 245 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Educational Grants.

33.

andMr. G. Lynch asked the Minister for Education (a) how many remoteness grants were made available to Kerry students for 1969-70, (b) the names of pupils who qualified for these grants and (c) how many remoteness grants were made available for 1969-70 for the country as a whole.

The number of remoteness grants made available for the school year 1969-70 is 298; of these 17 are in respect of students from County Kerry. The furnishing of the names of the students concerned would not be in keeping with normal practice and procedure.

Will the Minister tell us why more information has not been made available regarding this scheme to the different schools in County Kerry? Is the scheme confined to a privileged few?

The Deputy is well aware that it is not confined to a privileged few. If the Deputy has any case about which he is concerned let him send it to me and I shall look into it.

I discussed this matter on the telephone with officials of the Minister's Department and they were reluctant to admit that such a scheme was in existence.

That is rather childish. If the Deputy has any case——

I know very well why you did not give the names.

This is a typical type of comment. If the Deputy has any case about which he is concerned let him send it to me.
