Vol. 245 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Television Reception.

46.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs what steps are being taken to improve television reception in Youghal and Cobh, County Cork.

The improvement of television reception is primarily a matter for Radio Telefís Éireann. Concerning Youghal, which is on the fringe of the service areas of two of the main transmitters, I understand that in some sections of the town which are shadowed by high ground the quality of reception is below the normal standard. The authority are fully aware of the position but their immediate plans for the improvement of reception in places where it is still unsatisfactory are based on giving priority to areas of maximum population and they cannot say, at present, when Youghal will be reached. In some cases, I am informed, better reception could be obtained by using more efficient aerials and RTÉ will be glad to advise in cases of this nature.

Concerning Cobh, the authority inform me that they are not aware of any complaint. If the Deputy will be good enough to furnish particulars of any difficulty known to him, the matter will be examined.
