Vol. 245 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Poisonous Substances in Agriculture.

6.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the reasonably safe periods of time in which an agricultural worker may be continuously exposed to the poisonous substances listed in the proposed amendment No. 121 which was tabled to the Health Bill, 1969, without risk to health or risk of poisoning.

I am advised that the safe period of exposure to poisonous substances used in agriculture would depend on various factors such as the toxicity and degree of concentration of the substance, the manner of application, whether applied in the open or in a greenhouse, the precautions taken et cetera.

I am aware that, with workers taking due precautions, relevant legislation elsewhere permits, for example, working periods for certain operations of (a) up to ten hours on any day, (b) 60 hours in any period of seven consecutive days; or (c) 120 hours in any period of 21 consecutive days.
