Vol. 245 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence Force Recruitment.

20.

asked the Minister for Defence the total cost to his Department of recruiting advertisements since 1st August last year (a) on the national broadcasting services, (b) in the national press and (c) in other media; and the similar costs for the same period of the previous year.

Recruiting advertising for the Permanent Defence Force since the 1st August, 1969, in radio and television, in the national morning and Sunday newspapers and by means of posters and pamphlets was carried out under a contract with an advertising agency. This contract was placed as a result of competitive tendering and it would be contrary to established practice to disclose the contract prices. For the Deputy's information, however, I can say that the cost of all recruiting publicity, including the cost of publicity arranged otherwise than by contract during the period of the recent campaign is estimated at approximately £24,500. The total cost of recruiting advertising for the period 1st August, 1968, to 31st March, 1969, was £4,731.
