Vol. 245 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South Tipperary Employment.

25.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if in view of the widespread unemployment in the constituency of Tipperary South he will have the area designated as underdeveloped so as to provide maximum grants to assist existing industries now closed or in serious difficulties, and in order to attract new industries to provide employment for the many workers who have lost their jobs.

I am not satisfied that conditions in the South Tipperary Constituency are such as to warrant its declaration as a designated area for industrial grants' purposes. The generous incentives provided by the Government for the promotion of industry have operated to attract industry to the area. I am aware of difficulties which have arisen in connection with certain existing industries in the area but I am hopeful that these difficulties will be short-lived.
