Vol. 246 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Comprehensive School Principal.

40.

asked the Minister for Education the minimum qualifications for appointment as principal of a comprehensive school.

Minimum qualifications are not specified in advertising the position of principal in a comprehensive school, but applicants are requested to furnish full particulars of their qualifications. Appointments are made on the recommendations of the board of management of the school concerned. Before making their recommendation the board of management consider all the applications and interview those candidates whom they feel have such qualifications and experience as would render them suitable for the post of principal of a comprehensive school.

Would the Minister like to state who in fact appoints the board of management of such schools?

That is a separate question. The question relates to the appointment of a principal.

If the Deputy puts down a question on that it will be answered.

Would the Minister agree that a provisional teaching qualification would be highly desirable?

Of course, the person concerned would be a teacher.
