Vol. 246 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Slot Machines Proposal.

37.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to a report (details supplied) relating to a proposal to tax slot machines; and if he will state the present tax position relating to these machines.

I have seen the newspaper report referred to. It was obviously based on pre-Budget speculation and had no foundation in fact.

The present tax position is that an amusement hall or funfair where slot machines are operated must be licensed under the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956. The excise duty on the licence is £10 per quarter. The takings from slot machines are subject to turnover tax.

It is the intention to amend legislation to allow the use of those machines?

They are allowed at present.

Will there be amending legislation to enable them to be more widely used?

Any amendment of the legislation in that regard is a matter for the Minister for Justice.
