Vol. 247 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Transport Scheme.

10.

asked the Minister for Education what is the present position relating to the application under the school transport scheme for the children from the Leap, Roscrea, County Tipperary, attending Coolderry national school, County Offaly; and if he will expedite a favourable decision in the matter.

In order to warrant the establishment of a transport service to a national school from any locality it is necessary that there be at least ten children, eligible by age and distance for conveyance. As it was found on investigation that this requirement is not fulfilled in the case of the Leap district I could not sanction a transport service from that district to Coolderry national school.

Has the Parliamentary Secretary stated that there are not sufficient numbers to qualify for transport?

Yes, that is so.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say how many children are eligible at the moment?

I stated in my reply that there were fewer than ten. There are, in fact, eight.

As far as I am aware there are over ten.

My information is that there are not. If the Deputy sends me details of the others we can discuss it at a later date.

11.

asked the Minister for Education what is the present position relating to the application under the school transport scheme for the children from the Malone, Kilcommon, Towra and Clicka areas attending Shinrone national school, County Offaly, for free transport; and if he will expedite a favourable decision in the matter.

CIE have been requested to investigate the feasibility of establishing a transport service to Shinrone National School from the areas in question. I hope to have the CIE report and to be able to give a decision in the matter at an early date.

I should like to give notice of my desire to raise on the Adjournment the matter of the pass mathematics leaving certificate paper which has been the subject of protest by six educational bodies.

The Chair will communicate with the Deputy.
