Vol. 247 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Pensioners.

12.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether there are any former employees of CIE in receipt of pensions of less than 30s per week; if he will give the number and the amounts received; and whether any improvement in the amount given to pensioners of CIE who are in receipt of pensions which have not kept pace with the cost of living is under consideration.

I am informed by CIE that there is only one former employee of the company with a pension of less than 30s a week.

This female pensioner retired in August, 1963 on a wage rate of less than £6 per week and in accordance with the terms of the CIE scheme she was only entitled to a pension of 23s per week. She is, of course, also entitled to social welfare benefits which in accordance with the last Budget are being increased in her case by a further 15s weekly from October next.

Pre-April, 1963 pensioners were by decision of the Government granted a special increase of 10s per week from 1st March, 1970. Later this week, I will be meeting a deputation from the National CIE Pensioners' Association to discuss the position of those who retired after April, 1963.
